Tammy: Social Finance Worker

Spotted: The Sunset, SF

What are you up to today?
I just got back from visiting family out of town. I worked out today, did the Dailey Method. The founder's name is Jill Dailey and it's all about physical therapy and rehab, but based on the barre method. It makes me feel good after I've been on a plane.

How long have you been doing that?
About three years.

What kinds of changes have you noticed?
I don't have to get massages or go to the chiropractor really any more, so it takes the place of that. Plus it really strengthens the core. So yeah, I was just hanging out today. I was just at the General Store and I'm going to go to the other avenues.

I've been meaning to go by that store. I've been hearing good things about it.
They have some good stuff. They sell these mugs by Kat and Roger — they're from LA. My kitten broke my mug, so I was going to see if they had a new one. They get another shipment in a couple of weeks.

What kinds of mugs do they do?
Well, it's more like a cup with a foot and it's hand-painted. They're really beautiful. So it's almost like a ceremonial thing when you're drinking it.

So it's almost like a goblet but with a short stem?
Tiny stem, yeah. Kat and Roger — you'll have to look them up. They're good.

What is your occupation?
I work in social finance at a foundation. We do lending, and specifically I work in loan operations.

What do you like most about what you do?
Well I love the people, and I love creating organization from chaos. But the actual organization is what I love most. It's a nonprofit, and we're working trying to change the way the world works with money through lending, giving, and investing. Specifically with education and the arts, ecological stewardship, and food systems.

Where are some of your favorite places to hang out in the area?
In the neighborhood, I guess in front of Trouble Coffee. Trouble Coffee is the best. Golden Gate Park is right there. Ocean Beach is amazing — the beach sand dunes. It's a good weekend if I can stay local. There's other places, too — Flora Grubb Nursery is another one.

That place is awesome.
I go there for relaxing. And my backyard! I actually have a garden.

Ah, so Flora Grubb must be your inspiration spot!
Yes, that's right!

What's something that's caught your interest lately?
I'm going to Outside Lands festival this weekend. My husband's a photographer so he's a product manager for Amazon Prime music, and as part of that they give him and his friends passes to go take photos. I get to go too, so I'm kind of stoked about that. First Aid Kit is an awesome band — they're Swedish sisters. I saw them at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass a couple of years ago and they're playing at Outside Lands. Wilco is amazing too, and they're going to be there as well.

I also wanted to ask you about what inspires your personal style.
Where I live and wanting to be comfortable. San Francisco has really inspired me. I've lived here for 10 years.

Where did you move from?
Nebraska. It's hot and humid there. But I find that if you find quality pieces you can keep them for a really long time, even if they start to fray a little bit. It's like an old friend.

So tell me about what you're wearing!
This dress is Isabel Marant and I've had it for, like, three years. I got it in Hayes Valley.

Those glasses are nice too.
These are Karen Walker. I got them last year when I was in New Zealand. That was a fun trip. These shoes are just classic Birkenstocks, and this bag is just a well-loved African bag that's my grocery bag.
